Dear Professor Armando Basso,

Since we got the authority of WFNS Foundation, half a year have been past .I am very pleased to have a report of China minimally invasive neurosurgery continued educational center in 2007 for you.

1. The Training Center for endovascular neurogery: 20 trainees have undergone this training course with diploma this year. The trainees took part in all medical activities including patient management and operation assistance. Each trainee had attended at least 80 cases to practice assistance and 20 lectures. All of the trainees have passed the theoretical examinations and tests of image diagnosis, English translation and practical operation and writen a thesis each.

2. The Clinical Training Center for General Neurosurgery: 10 trainees have undergone this training course with diploma this year. Trainees participated in all medical activities such as patient management and operation assistance. Each trainee managed at least 60 patients, take part in more than 50 operations and attend 20 lectures this year. All of the trainees passed written exams on the basic theory of neurosurgery and English translation as well as practical operation tests. They also wrote thesis each.

3. Yasargil Microneurosurgical Training Center: 23 trainees have undergone this training course with diploma this year. In August this year, Prof. Gazi Yasargil visited our base again and give us many direction for training. All of the trainees passed the test of surgical mouse renal transplantation, translate an English literature and write a thesis on microsurgery theory.

4. Samii Skull Base Training Center: 15 trainees have undergone this training course with diploma this year. All of the trainees passed the exam on skull base anatomy theory, completed anatomical markings on different tissue layers of one approach, translated a literature from English to Chinese and write a thesis.

5. The Neuro-endoscopic Training Center: 34 trainees have undergone this training course with diploma this year. Apart from attended lectures and visiting living surgeries, the trainees studied anatomical structure and performed surgical approaches with endoscope on cadavers.

6. The Spinal Surgery Training Center: 48 trainees have undergone this training course with diploma this year. Apart from attended lectures and visiting living surgeries, the trainees performed various kinds of spinal fixing skills on the cadavers.

The center also accepted a trainee from Thailand. He spent one and half year in China center. He completed the Endovascular neurosurgery training program, Samii skull base microsurgery training program, Yasargil microsurgery training program and neuro-endoscopic training program.

Excluding the routine programs, there are 2 short programs operate in this center too. One is the 4th International Course of Clinical Neurosurgery in which 400 doctors all over China joined ,and another one is the 9th Congress of World Federation of Interventional and Therapeutic Neuroradiology which attracted 2000 doctors all around the world to particpate.

Beijing Training Center for General Neurosurgery

The Training Center for Interventional Neuroradiology: Founded in 1993, it enlists 5 to 10 trainees every year for a one-year course. The trainees take part in all medical activities including patient management and operation assistance. Each trainee has at least 80 cases to practice assistance and 20 lectures to attend annually. To accomplish this course, trainees have to pass theoretical examinations and tests of image diagnosis, English translation and practical operation and write a thesis each. They are granted diploma only if qualified in tests and overall evaluation. About 192 trainees have undergone this training course with diploma so far, distributing in all provinces, autonomous regions and metropolitans under the state jurisdiction of China including Taiwan, Hong Kang and Macau. Doctors from Malaysia, Thailand and Pakistan also came to the center for training though at a shorter term.

2. The Clinical Training Center for General Neurosurgery: Founded in 2001, it recruits 5 trainees every one-year term. Trainees participate in all medical activities such as patient management and operation assistance. Each trainee has to manage at least 60 patients, take part in 50 operations and attend 20 lectures a year. Before the end of the training course, the trainees have to pass written exams on the basic theory of neurosurgery and English translation as well as practical operation tests. They also have to write theses each. When qualified for the tests and on-job evaluation at the end of the term, they are granted diplomas. Till now, we have trained 47 students this way.

3. Yasargil Microneurosurgical Training Center: Founded in 2001, it was personally inaugurated by Prof. Gazi Yasargil who, ever since then, serves as the Honorary Director. It takes 12 trainees every term of 4 months. With 6 sets of surgical microscopes and operating tables, they practice mouse vessel anastomosis as the basic microsurgery skill training. Apart from attending at least 20 lectures a term, they have to observe routine operations each day. At the end of the term, the trainees have to pass a test of surgical mouse renal transplantation, translate an English literature and write a thesis on microsurgery theory each together with overall evaluation before they are qualified for diplomas. 122 trainees have completed the course up to now.

4. Samii Skull Base Training Center: Founded in 2004, it was personally inaugurated by Prof. Madjid Samii who then became its Honorary Director. It recruits 10-12 trainees every term which lasts 2 months. It is equipped with 6 sets of surgical microscopes and operating tables. The trainees are required to attend 32 lectures and perform 10 types of surgical approaches to the skull base and anatomical studies on corps heads. They also have daily routine operations to observe. Before the end of the term, the trainees have to sit an exam on skull base anatomy theory, complete anatomical markings on different tissue layers of one approach, do a translation from an English literature to Chinese and write a thesis. Only those who can pass the above tests and have a good overall evaluation result are granted diplomas. 51 trainees have so far finished the course with a diploma.

5. The Neuro-endoscopic Training Center: Founded in 2005, it has 12 endoscopes and enrolls trainees for a term of 3 weeks. Apart from attending 9 lectures, the trainees have to study anatomical structure and practice surgical approaches with endoscope on corps heads. We have trained 41 doctors in terms up till now.

6. The Spinal Surgery Training Center: Founded in 2005, it has 6 operating tables. Each term takes in 18-24 trainees for a 3-week course. The trainees have to attend 11 lectures and practice various kinds of spinal fixing skills on the corps. We have held 2 courses with 40 trainees so far.

The Base also accepts 2 trainees from the developing countries every year for advanced learning. These trainees must prove their qualification with university graduation degrees and neurosurgeon practice license of their original nations. They have to acquire proficient language ability in either English or Chinese. Our Base provides free boarding and lodging as well as pocket money of 500 yaun per month for each trainee.

Ours is still a developing country and we know profoundly the necessity and difficulty to pursue learning and training. Now we enjoy better conditions in China and yet, we should not forget those doctors in the poor regions who are also eager to learn new skills and knowledge. It is our strong wish to do our utmost in providing good facilities to our colleagues in other developing countries. Therefore, we summit herewith our application for joining the WFNS Foundation network of training centers for continued education of neurosurgeons in the developing countries as our joint commitment to making contributions to mankind.

Thank you for your consideration and approval.
