    About the Training Center:

    Southern Tohoku Research Institute for Neuroscience is a core corporation of the Fukushima Prefecture-based Southern Tohoku Group, which operates eight hospitals in Tokyo and three other prefectures. The Corporation operates medical facilities and nursing homes, centering on its affiliated Southern Tohoku Hospital (461 beds) in Koriyama City. It opened Japan’s first privately managed proton therapy center, and is now promoting a plan to develop and demonstrate a cancer treatment equipment using boron-neutron capture therapy (BNCT) as the first hospital in the world to do so. Southern Tohoku Research Institute for Neuroscience is pleased to announce fellowships for young neurosurgeons.

     

    Program Details:

    • The duration of clinical training fellowship will be 6 months up to a maximum of 2 years.
    • The monthly stipend is JPY150,000(approximatelyUSD1,250).
    • Furnished accommodation will be prepared, and the room charge that fellows have to pay is JPY 56,000 (approximately USD470)/month.
    • Traveling expenses are not covered.
    • Fellows have the liberty to observe any Neurosurgical subspecialty they are interested in, which include: cerebrovascular surgeries, brain tumors, spine surgeries, endoscopic surgeries, interventional neuroradiology, proton beam therapy and stereotactic radiosurgeries for brain tumors etc.
    • Fellows will be allowed attend to conferences, workshops and other educational activities organized by Southern TOHOKU General Hospital during the fellowship period.
    • Fellows are allowed to assist all surgeries and perform selected surgery under supervisor. In order to assist and perform surgery, fellows need to fulfill the requirements for medical registration with the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.

    The requirements are:

    1. enter Japan in order to acquire the knowledge and skills related to medical care
    2. passed the relevant national licensing examination in the country of conferment of basic degree (where applicable) and have a minimum of 3 years of clinical experience
    3. Japanese or English language proficiency

    • Statement of Educational Goals (600-800 words) Please give your reasons for seeking advanced training at Southern TOHOKU Research Institute for Neuroscience Southern TOHOKU General Hospital in Japan and your goals for elective. Be as specific as possible about what you would like to do at Southern TOHOKU Research Institute for Neuroscience Southern TOHOKU General Hospital and in each department during your elective rotation. This statement is very important in finding you the best appointment for your particular needs. You should consult your mentor before completing this to make sure of the objectives.
    • Two Letters of Recommendation

    Two letters of recommendation from your principal, professor, or dean are required. The letters should indicate the specific needs of your institution or your research that will be fulfilled by your experience at the Hospital. One letter must be from the associated dean of students or equivalent. This letter must state the student is in good standing and good health.

    • A copy of doctor license.
    • Certification of more than 3 years of clinical experience.
    • Certification of English Skills TOEIC 615 or TOEFL 510 is required for students from non-English speaking countries. If you have difficulties in obtaining scores, we will assess in an alternative method.
    • Immunization record
    • A copy of your current passport. It must include your photo, your signature, the passport number, the place of issue, and the expiration date.

    How to apply:

    The applicant please fill out the Online Application Form and sumbit 1 year beofre the date when you wish to begin the training. Only the online application will be accepted. At the end of satisfactorily completing the rotation, Certificates are issued by the WFNS.
